The Battling Cancer blog points to an excellent resource from the National Cancer Institute: a 9-page PDF document detailing exactly how bone marrow transplants work, from the perspective of the donor and the patient, as well as the preparations involved. Note that the document is almost four years old, so a few things are just slightly out of date (like the cost of registering in the US, and possibly some of the marrow extraction details).
